Maine State Museum, Augusta, Maine
Rufus Johnson 1862

This organ was built by local organ builder Rufus Johnson of Sacarappa (Westbrook), Maine for the Stroudwater (Portland, ME) Congregational Church. One of three known to have been built by Rufus Johnson. When the church was torn down at the turn of the 20th century to make way for a retirement home for women, the organ was relocated to a small school house that was to be used as a chapel for the home. The organ remained untouched for decades and is in remarkably original condition. When the chapel was due to be moved in 2002 the board of directors for the home donated the organ to the Maine state Museum.
